Hello Doomers!, today i am going to be making a tutorial on making doors in your custom Doom levels.
first, you are going to need to open up a Doom map editor. the one that i use is Ultimate Doom Builder.
If you dont have one, you can get one here. -----> devbuilds.drdteam.org/ultimatedoombuilder/
Now open up your doom builder.First you need to set up a format, i recommend using GZDoom in Hexen format for your doors to work. Now you need to draw 2 sectors, so for this example, i am going to be using two rectangles
now draw a sector in the middle of the void space in between both areas.
go into sectors mode and right click on that sector you just drew. click on the "New" button, this will add a tag to the sector you created.
now go into linedefs mode, make sure that all of the linedefs on the sector are selected. now right click on one of the linedefs, it will bring up a window. click on the "Browse Action" button.
Once you have it selected, you click on the tiny plus box right next to "Door" and then select "Door Generic" and press "Ok"
Now you click on the arrow right next to the panel "Sector Tag", a panel will lower below it, now you select "1" [for multiple doors, the tags will be different. click on the tag that corresponds with each door, like if the tag was 2 for example]
Now this next step is optional, you can change the movement speed of the door by selecting the arrow of the "Movement Speed" panel below the "Sector Tag" panel. you can change the speed to slow or fast using this.
Now make sure you select the check box "Repeatable Action", if you dont, your door will only open once.
Next you will select the way the door will be opened [if you want to press against it to open or shoot it to open, etc.] select the "Trigger" panel and select one of the options available, but for this tutorial [and the majority of the doors in Doom]
i will be selecting "Player Presses Use"
If you want to lock a door, you select the arrow next to the "Lock" panel and then select a key you want to lock it with, But for this tutorial, i will leave it unlocked.
Now after all of that is completed, you can click the "Ok" button to save your changes and close the window.
Next you will have to go into "Visual Mode". Press the Q key on the keyboard to go into Visual Mode.
now you will see an opening that connects two rooms, this is the sector we have been working on. you will also see two walls connecting the opening, left click on both of them, and then right click.
[unfortunately, i can not show a picture here, because i cant move my cursor in visual mode, so i can not use the snipping tool]
once you right click, click on the checkbox that says "Lower Unpegged", this will prevent the side textures from moving when the door opens.
now look at the ceiling in the sector we have been working on, lower that ceiling to the floor by scrolling your mouse wheel down. now you will see missing textures on both sides of the wall that you lowered. left click on both missing textures and then right click. you will see the window show up. there will be 6 boxes in the top of the window, click on the one with the warning sign.
Now select the texture of your choosing! for this tutorial i will be using the texture "BIGDOOR4"
Congratulations! you have successfully made a functioning door! i hope my tutorial has been a big help to you!
if you have any additional questions, feel free to comment!
